To tip or not to tip? How much, and when is it appropriate? These are questions we are asked from clients who are new to housecleaning services. A discussion on tipping can sometimes feel awkward on both sides, however it doesn’t need to be. Tipping housecleaners is common, as it is in other service-related industries, and it is completely up to the client if they wish to do so or not. From the housecleaner's point of view, tipping is appreciated but not expected.
If a client chooses to tip, here are some of the reasons to support that generous choice.
To show appreciation for a job well done - Tips seem to be an unspoken thank you, and I approve of you and your work. A housecleaner who receives a tip is firstly, and most importantly, grateful. They feel appreciated and that you were happy and satisfied with the services they performed. They are more comfortable coming back to clean your home with the approval a tip signifies. They will go above and beyond when the situation presents itself, sometimes staying later than scheduled (and paid) to ensure everything is how you like it.
Tipping helps to hold onto that housecleaner you really like - In any cleaning company there are those seasoned, exceptional housecleaners who seem to do everything exactly to your liking. These housecleaners are also valuable to the companies they work for. Housecleaners typically top out at what a company can pay them hourly. Often they have a set schedule of clients who tip to generate the extra income they have earned by being exceptional.
Tips can be a way to motivate - Housecleaners generally like cleaning, and they take personal satisfaction from a job well done. Generally for every cleaning they try very hard to make sure everything is done thoroughly and to expectations. That being said, there may be an occasion when for whatever reason something doesn’t quite meet the clients expectations. In this instance, the client may lessen the usual tip a bit to indicate that something was off from the usual cleaning.
If a client chooses to tip, how much to tip and how to leave a tip depends solely on what works best for the client.
There is no rule of thumb when it comes to tipping. Tipping is always seen as the kind gesture that it is. Housecleaners are happy to just know they were appreciated and you are pleased with their services. Most newcomers to housekeeping services believe they have to give a certain amount in order for it to be considered a legitimate tip. This is incorrect. The housecleaner has no expectations; anything they receive will be appreciated.
Most housecleaning companies have a system that sends an invoice for payment after the cleanings are finished. There will be an option to choose to include a tip, optional for every invoice. The amount can be by percentage or filled in by exact amount.
Cash tip - can be given to the cleaner upon exit or left on a counter for them if the client is not home.
Payment systems like Venmo and Zelle are sometimes used with the housecleaner's account information.
