When it comes to cleaning up after our furry friends, advice is always welcome. We love them like family, and just like family, if they are in the home, they can make a mess. Although a lot of those messes can easily be maintained, it’s always the dog hair that gets out of control. Many of our clients have requested housecleaning services based on the need to keep up on floors and other areas that collect dog hair. As professional housecleaners, we have experience with cleaning up the dog hair and have some helpful tips.
Top to bottom cleaning is always the best way to move dust and pet hair from the upper surfaces to the floor. If you have stairs and handrail, always dust and vacuum these first. Use the upholstery tool from the vacuum cleaner to thoroughly vacuum the stairs. Don’t forget about the ledges along the staircase; dog hair will collect here. Give some time for the dust and pet hair to settle to the floor, then dust the furniture. Using a damp microfiber cloth to dust will help trap the debris. The upholstery tool can be used to vacuum pet hair from couches and chairs. Many pet owners are finding it easier to clean leather and other types of smooth surface sofas as opposed to fabric upholstery that holds onto pet hair.
Once the pet hair has been cleaned from the upper surfaces and has settled to the floor it’s time to use the vacuum. It is important that you use a vacuum that is good for cleaning up pet hair. Ideally the vacuum should have a good brush roller, a detachable wand, upholstery tools, and a HEPA filter. Vacuum each room starting with the detachable wand. Start with the edges of the floor including the corners and behind doors. As you are vacuuming around the edges, vacuum the baseboards as well. While using the detachable wand, vacuum the areas behind and under furniture and other areas pet hair will collect. Finish each room by thoroughly vacuuming the rest of the floor surface.
Rugs! We can’t forget the rugs, that is where you will find the pet hair hardest to remove. When it comes to dog hair and rugs, here is where your decorating comes into play. Certain types of rugs are not practical from a cleaning perspective. With many, no vacuum cleaner is ever going to get 100% of the dog hair off. Dog hair has actually moved into the fabric of that particular rug. There are beautiful rugs available that are more pet friendly and easier to clean, if that is important to you. Area rugs that are machine washable are also good choices.
The final step to the pet hair clean-up is mopping. Make sure you did a very thorough job of vacuuming and have removed the area rugs prior to mopping. Using a spray bottle with an eco-friendly cleaner and a mop with a microfiber mop head is recommended. The spray bottle can deliver the cleaning solution where it is needed and not create unnecessary wetness. The microfiber mop head will do the best job possible to grab onto any remaining pet hair. You will most likely find stray dog hair. Wait until the floor has dried, then vacuum up the stray hair. DO NOT put the rugs back down on a wet floor if they have any pet hair on them. Rugs should be thoroughly shaken/vacuumed or washed and put down carefully onto the clean, dry floor.
Hopefully these tips will help get that pet hair in the home under control. We are always happy to help if you need a cleaning service to tackle the job for you.
